Chalk – ‘Bliss’ review: The trio’s most emotional and euphoric anthem to date

Bliss is the new single from Belfast post-punk darlings ‘Chalk’ featuring Irish artist ‘Fears’.

By Logan Johnson

Perhaps the trio’s most emotional and euphoric anthem to date, ‘Bliss’ is the new single from the group’s upcoming EP ‘Conditions II’. Following an incredibly successful 2023, Chalk show no signs of slowing down and Bliss is the perfect song to soundtrack their rise to greatness in 2024. A heartbreaking track that will have anyone that listens to it dancing on the verge of tears. Think New Order being fronted by Ian Curtis.

Bliss begins in classic Chalk fashion with an immediate tension-building drum part from Luke Niblock. We see a more earnest side of front man Ross Cullen with the opening line “She’s fallen through my hand’s”. This sets the tone for the rest of the track, which the group described as being about ‘two people who once shared a love seeing each other again’. The simple yet massive chorus is destined to be sung back to the trio by thousands of onlookers as beer and t-shirts go flying in every direction. A future I cannot wait to be a part of.

The incredible ‘Fears’ showcases her hauntingly beautiful voice throughout the second verse of the song, playing the protagonist’s long-lost love. This is certainly a collaboration I didn’t know I needed so badly until now. The star of the show, however, is guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Ben Goddard’s scintillating riffs that guide the listener into a state of ‘Bliss’.
